In Memorandum – Fred Jervis

A former Lowdham resident and life member of Lowdham Horticultural Society, Fred Jervis, has recently died aged 88.

Fred was an active member of the Society for many years, some local residents might remember his small allotment at the side of the W I Hut.

Due to relocation at work Fred and Joan left Lowdham for Lincolnshire where he promptly set about creating a lovely new garden.  His love of gardening, vegetables and flowers kept him going for many years.

SUMMER SHOW

This year’s Summer Show is fast approaching. The schedule and entry form can be downloaded from our website www.lowdhamhortsoc.org.uk.  Paper copies will be available at various shops in the Lowdham and Burton Joyce over the next few days.

As usual, we will be setting up the marquee etc on the afternoon of Sunday 28th August so any help then, or for an hour or two at the Show on the Monday, would be much appreciated.

Enjoy the sunshine and your gardens

SOCIAL EVENING

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.

Just a reminder that this Friday, 8th January we are hosting the social with the History Society, 7.30pm at the Village Hall.  We shall we putting on a selection of quizzes and have invited John and Gail Summerfield (who presented our December talk) to run one of these – which should be fun!  As we are hosting we ask members of LHS to bring along something savoury or sweet to form part of a light buffet.  The Horticultural Society will be providing drinks, so no need to bring these.

I would also like to remind you that our next Coach visit is to Harrogate Spring Show on Sunday 24th April.  We are able to buy cheaper tickets in advance so the cost of the trip is very reasonable at £20 for members and £24 for non-members (this includes transport and entry into the show).  It would be great to take a coach full and all are welcome.  I will bring a sheet for people to sign up at the social and ask for payment well in advance as the tickets need to be pre-purchased.

Hoping to see lots of you on Friday evening.

SUMMER SHOW

Just a note to say thank you as your help and support was very much appreciated on Sunday and Monday.

Despite the poor weather the show was enjoyed by all that visited and it was nice to see new exhibitors this year with the addition particularly of the Hawks of Steele.

It is lovely that you were prepared to commit to be involved and give up a day to help us. Those who shifted, lifted, poured tea, coffee and offered cake, directed, delegated, cleared up, cleaned down, collected money and got wet.

Thank you

I would also like to thank those of you who entered the classes, as without the exhibits themselves there would be nothing to look at.

  • The cultivating and nurturing of all those flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables is a yearlong mammoth task involving expertise and knowledge. Thanks for sharing!
  • To grandparents, mums and dads, thank you for encouraging your young people to enter
  • To the cooks and bakers and jam makers! Thanks for slaving over a hot stove – it was definitely a feast for the eyes!
  • Floral Art – always a talking point – but we need more
  • Those crafty people creating the beautiful handicrafts – amazing! Again…. let’s have more!
  • ….. and all those fabulous photographs

Well done to all of you. You are very important. Looking forward to 2015
